Τα μαγιό δύο τεμαχίων υπήρχαν, αλλά κάλυπταν ως επί το πλείστον την περιοχή της κοιλιάς μέχρι που στις  5 Ιουλίου του 1946, η 19χρονη γαλλίδα μοντέλο και χορεύτρια Micheline Bernardini έκανε το ντεμπούτο τους με τα γνωστά "μπικίνι" στην δημοφιλή πισίνα  Molitor.

Δημιουργήθηκαν από τον Louis Réard, γάλλο μηχανικό αυτοκινήτων και σχεδιαστή ρούχων, που άνοιξε ένα κατάστημα μπικίνι και το "έτρεξε" για τα επόμενα 40 χρόνια.
